Skateboarding is so fashion hot mainstream these days. There was VOGUE’s skate week, the cringe worthy term ‘off-duty’ models wearing Thrasher, there’s Ben Nordberg, and now the fashion website FASHIONISTA (no relation to Pizzanista) is interviewing KCDC employees, NYC skate filmers, and other core skate brands about their thoughts on fashion’s “appropriation” of their culture.

What the fuck???

It’s all pretty hilarious though. Lotties skate shop told @VOGUEmagazine to “Suck our vaginas.” Also mentioned is:

“One New York-based skate filmer, who also asked to remain anonymous, claimed to have been contacted by Vogue to do some consulting for its “Skate Week,” and came out of the meeting feeling irate. “I think Vogue is fucking dumb and knows nothing about skating, and their approach was ignorant and stupid,” he said. The filmer told us that the involved staffers did little more than ask bland, generic questions about skating, making him feel as if they were “brain dead” to skateboarding and its culture as a whole. He said he suggested that the publication be careful, and not to go about its coverage in a corny way, as it would end up looking bad on them to all real skateboarders — and in the end, if reactions over social media were any indication, that’s almost exactly what happened.”

Skate brands like Palace, Bianca Chandon, Quartersnacks, Bronze 56K, + Alltimers are laughing to the bank as they are being carried at Dover Street Market, which means boutiques all over are going to want a piece.

The KCDC employee had this to say, “I think the people who get mad about it are those who try to ‘own’ skateboarding, but you can’t own skateboarding. It’s for everyone and you can’t try to claim it as your own. I think it’s flattering to skateboarding that it’s reaching other areas and other lifestyles, but it sucks if they don’t do it properly or get the right people involved.”

But I think Thrasher’s main G Eben Sterling summed it up best with the quote, “… as far as the crazy trend of fashion models (and some extremely douchey male pop stars) wearing Thrasher gear: if you haven’t figured it out yet, life is a fucking mystery. You put out your story and it gets twisted up and often comes back the opposite. You can’t control that. The reason models in NYC are wearing Thrasher is because they love our story. My hope is that Thrasher gear is the bridge for NYC skaters to hook up with some hot girls. Get some.”

Truth.
