The Most Tearjerking Comeback Victory in WSL History

We’re not huge on covering the WSL here at BoardRap, not because we don’t follow it, but because it’s usually very stale. However when a legend like Owen Wright, who only a year ago was relearning how to surf due to a potentially career ending head injury, wins his first contest back and leaves the entire beach in tears as he kisses his newborn baby and partner… well that’s an epic story.

Surf journalist extraordinaire Chris Binns wiped away his own tears and caught up with his old friend immediately after his big win.

“… an incredible fairy tale played out on the Men’s side of the draw, with Owen Wright recovering from significant brain trauma in the most improbable and incredible fashion imaginable.

As if a return to competition wasn’t enough, a return to the top of the podium sealed one of the more remarkable days in recent World Tour history. After the first event of the year, Owen Wright — who six months ago was easing himself back into the lineup on a longboard — is now the #1 ranked surfer in the world. Let that soak in for a while.”
