Surf Shack: Inside Kassia’s Radical Topanga Hippie Commune
Much like many surfers, creative types, and artists that have been living in Venice, CA the last decade, Kassia Meador has made a run for the hills of Topanga. Left in her wake is a trail of rich tech nerds and trust fund kids that are paying out the ass to crowd the previous mean streets of Venice.
But change is good and Kassia is stoked to be out of the rat race and living in a radical hippie-like commune that is close to good waves and good friends. Indoek have become the masters of showing the world how our favorite surfers and related sort live and this Surf Shack feature on Kassia is no different. One can only imagine the wild group times that go down in the meditation room with the soothing sound bath echoing throughout the peaceful canyon of Topanga.
Sounds a little like the beginning of the ‘Kidbutz’ of Topanga Canyon, which The New York Times wrote about earlier this summer. It’s a co-living, family “vanguard of communal living and child rearing, contemporary-style, where a dusty, off-the-grid farm in the middle of nowhere gives way to a sprawling $2 million house with endless views and vaulted ceilings, a Viking kitchen and multiple terraces, 20 minutes from Santa Monica.”
Perhaps there will be a surf version in the near future? Would be nice.
Here’s a little more from Kassia about the converted horse stables she now calls home:
“It’s a super awesome spot, I am so amped to live here. I live in a back converted barn-like zone. There is a front house that we share the land with and a bunch of radical like-minded people in there. Together we have chickens, a garden, a meditation / sound healing / tea ceremony spot we built out, and it’s just epic!!!”
