Steve Sherman Day | Surf photography legend talks, ‘Sherm Moment’

Any one that’s been on-site of a WSL surf event has seen surf photographer legend Steve Sherman in action. Always alone and wearing his weird hat and some sort of crazy cargo shorts or pants, yet he never fails to come out of the trenches with the greatest behind the scenes surf contest photographs of the day. In fact some say he invented this style of photography in surfing. T-Sherms pics of Kelly Slater and Andy Irons at the height of their competitive feuds will go down in history.

Today we’re given both a video interview from What Youth that looks through some of his historic archive as well as a Kill The Messenger podcast with Dave Prodan…. watch and listen!

“Steve Sherman is an absolute legend in every sense of the word. He’s in the trenches documenting some of the most amazing moments in the surfing’s history. Kelly walking in on Andy eating cereal the morning of the Pipe Masters, the Momentum Generation shots, Benji Weatherly about to paddle out at massive Pipe, countless Surfing Magazine covers and so many more images jump to mind as soon as his name is mentioned. We met up with Steve on the morning of the Lowers final to see him in action and find out what makes a “Sherm Moment”.” – WHAT YOUTH.

Episode 6 is organized into five segments:
– Intro: Welcome back to KTM.
– In the News: Cursory commentary on recent news.
– The Juice: Artist Covering Artists with Special Commentary from Steve Sherman
– On the Horizon: Quiksilver and Roxy Pro France
– Closing: Thanks for listening.

The Kill the Messenger Podcast with Dave Prodan is a surfing podcast wherein the 10-year ASP/WSL employee reviews current happenings in the surfing world as well as attempts to contextualize the entertainment, comedy, inspiration, misery and unending transcendence that surfing and its community provide on a daily basis.

Here's the story behind the Mick's Goldy Victory Limited Edtion TSHERMS Go to TSHERMSLIMITED.COM To get yours today !!! On March 12th. 2005,Mick Fanning (who had spent almost 6 months out of the water out of the water, due to a serous injury to his thigh muscle the year prior ) came roaring back to form to win the first event of the then ASP Tour at his home break of Snapper Rocks in Australia. Mick’s childhoood dream of winning the Quiky Pro on his home turf had come true.. It was a highly emotional victory for the” White Lighting” Queenslander who was immediately carried up the beach by his close friends, inclueding Joel Parkinson and Nathan Hedge. Also visible in the photo Ace lens men Ted Grambeau and Head of WSL security David “Woody Woods. Both also good friends of Mick. This is one my all time favorite “victory chair “ moment that I’ve ever shot. Five seconds after I shot this image on Tri-X film with my Hasselblad 500 CM,I stepped into a hole while back peddling in the waist deep water. Feel backwards and drowned my light meter, soaked my camera bag ,but kept the camera safe above the water!Once I got to the beach, I looked down at my feet and they were shredded by the razor sharp barnacles on the Snapper sea bottom.Needless to say I truly bled for this image!!
