MACBA to the Jungle | Trading French pro skating for pro poker in paradise
Skateboarders that develop into one of the professional variety usually have some sort of common OCD compared to most other sports. Just thing about the determination it takes to get a few kickflips to a reasonable percentage of landing. Then think about how many hundreds of tricks pros have at their disposal all with amazing style. It’s pretty mad. Andrew Reynolds might have put ‘the madness’ on the map, but I say nearly every great skateboarder has this similar OCD to some degree. Often they get to put this abnormal dedication to other random pursuits like Rodney Mullen.
Lucky for french skateboarder Raphael Brunis this same gene carries over into making for successful pro poker career. Raphael moved from Biarritz to Barcelona to skate the infamous MACBA when his crew started playing poker every night. Realizing he had a talent soon he was making a ton of money and not skateboarding at all. After some time of this he got depressed sitting behind a computer screen all day, so he packed up and moved to Costa Rica where he surfs, skates, and plays poker in a jungle environment. Not a bad life.
