People love to talk about sharks. Like, how can you surf? Aren’t you scared of sharks???

And now The Shallows is coming to theaters soon. Hollywood’s attempt to capitalize on it. If we’re lucky it’ll mean less surfers in the water.

In an attempt to capitalize on H-wood capitalizing, VICE has created a series behind the movie looking at the shit show that Reunion Island has become since becoming the deadliest place to surf in the world over the last five years.

Did you know….. “Locals have called the increase in attacks a crisis, which has received headlines around the world. Eighteen people have been attacked and 7 have been killed, all in the last five years.

That means that from 2011 to 2015, 13 percent of all the world’s fatal shark attacks have taken place around this tiny, 40-mile-long stretch of beach, which is roughly the same length as Manhattan’s shoreline.”

“For years, the residents of Réunion, a small island off the coast of Madagascar, have lived in coexistence with the vast ocean and its shark inhabitants that surround it. But since 2011, the number of shark attacks has increased to the point of crisis for the small island, leaving many puzzled as to what changed.
In part one of this documentary, Motherboard investigates the potential ecological and man-made causes for this recent spike in contact between humans and sharks, and its impact on the evolving complexity of the relationship between man and nature on this tiny island.”
