Ian Walsh is one of a kind. He’s just as comfortable in macking 60-foot waves as he is attending Coachella or snowboarding in Alaska. That kind of dude. He’s good at talking to the cameras too as this interview with VICE attests to.

“Ian Walsh’s life involves being chased down by 60+ foot waves and showing some style in the process. To him, that might seem pretty normal at this point, but to the rest of us, that’s almost unimaginable. It’s for that reason Ian and Red Bull Media House made a film, ‘Distance Between Dreams’, about his death-defying experiences in big wave surfing.”

Because as a surfer, one of the best parts of the day is sitting next to Shane Dorian and watching him whip it on a wave and have your heart in your throat. I want people to see those more intimate moments, to give a first-person perspective into our world, and also really show what goes into it. A lot of times when you watch edits on the internet, all you see are the successes. You don’t see the preparation, falls, sessions in their entirety. You don’t see a guy fall really bad, then get back out and play cat and mouse for three hours and get an incredible wave. There are a lot of ups and downs. We even captured what it looks like when you’re caught inside, and one of our cameramen @acl_cinema paid a pretty big price for those shots, literally taking bombs on the head."
