Dime Glory Challenge Full Re-Cap + Video | Behind skateboardings most eccentric “contest”
The Dime Glory Challenge is back! It was the biggest, most fun, most eccentric contest to hit skateboarding last year and things were just as wild this go around. Speed dealer shades for everyone! Millions of dollars tossed around like it was Monopoly money! Sluggo! The Berra Challenge! And much much more. Between the D.G.C and the CPH Open who needs the X Games or Olympics? Thrasher has the photo re-cap up now and expect the full video to be posted asap.
Jenkem takes a more first-person re-cap to the story, which highlights some gems. We didn’t know that the ‘Volcano Challenge’ was a low-key Steve Berra/Scientology diss. Maybe a little payback for Steve’s Instagram rant against DC seeing as they were the headline sponsor this year.
Here are a few cuts:
“It’s hard to even call this a contest after being there, it’s more along the lines of a reckless party with a little bit of “big” skating and a lot of bodily harm.”
“Each year it grows in popularity and absurdity all because of a few guys that have been skating together since they were kids.”
“If you want to skate and you’re blacked out, fuck it! Maybe it’s the socialized medicine or the lack of care.”
“Apparently Scientologists believe that at one point Xenu, the dictator of the Galactic Federation brought millions of his people to Earth and then killed them in volcanos (or something like that), so to stir up some more Berra drama, DC and Dime made this obstacle.”
“The women in Montreal make the trip up there worth it alone.”
“What really surprised me was Sluggo sliding about 6 feet on his back with his legs up in the air. I couldn’t believe he was able to spread his legs that far in the tightest pair of pants I’ve seen on a grown man.”
“I was in awe at some of the stuff I was seeing. Lee Yankou coming down from the ceiling on a rope, Yuri’s monstrous kickflip shifty, and even noticing that Erik Bragg has more hair than visible skin on his face. The entire competition and weekend were eye opening. Dime proved to skateboarding that you can dork around with your friends, come up with a fantasy like competition, and make skating look more fun than anything else in the world.”
