Surfing is not so simple around the world as it is in places like America or Australia. Often it is intermixed with extremely hard living, war, civil war, and more. Just look at what’s happening to the fabulous waves of Yemen right now. Combat photojournalist Nic Bothma has seen his far share of wild things, both war related and big wave related as he often shoots with Grant “Twiggy” Baker and the South African big wave crew. The Surfers Journal took a look into the life and work of Nic – a veteran war photographer with more than two decades of experience on the African continent – in a piece called War And Waves. Both the images and words are powerful and shocking.

“Mamba Point is actually a cooking left-hand pointbreak. I would watch in awe as six foot sets rolled down the point while mortars exploded in the field next to us.”

…….

“Since then, Bothma’s camera has taken him to the frontlines of Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Palestine, Togo, Darfur, the Ivory Coast, and countless other conflict zones. Invariably, he always keeps an eye out for waves, of which he has seen plenty. “West Africa is littered with waves but Dakar in Senegal is one of the coolest cities I lived in,”
