The relationship between surfing and skateboarding remains a close one since skate was born from surf way back when. It’s not exactly a two-sided relationship however as Nathan Fletcher and Ivan Florence discussed. It comes down to that ol’ board sports hierarchy where skateboarding sits at the top not caring about anything else. That’s still true to a degree, but we’d say that surfing has been staging a comeback with skateboarders over the last 5-10 years with some of the gnarliest skate rats getting in the water. AVE, Dylan, Austyn, Mikey Taylor, and many more are just a few that know how to properly catch a wave. Hell Arto Saari even moved to the North Shore.

IT SEEMS LIKE SURFERS LOOK TO SKATERS THESE DAYS, WHILE SKATERS DON’T REALLY GIVE A SHIT THE OTHER WAY AROUND…

Ivan Florence: Yeah I don’t know if skaters really look up to surfers at all these days [laughs]. But I do know a whole lot of surfers that love pro skateboarding and look up to the skaters and always amp on how much skating can help your surfing — which I think is pretty key with progressing. As far as learning goes, skating helps so much with balance, there’s a lot of similarities with grinding and turning. They’re both on boards, of course.
