The Hobgood’s Talk Doc | ‘And Two If By Sea’ is finally dropping
The whole twin thing is a trip. Sharing DNA and all that. What are the chances of one twin getting on the WSL tour let alone both. The whole CJ + Damien Hobgood story is mind boggling and that’s just the parts we know about them. Hard charging Florida twins that enjoy their God, but also like to have a good time. Surely during their path to the top of the surf world they had their ups and downs. Just think about how competitive Andy and Bruce Irons were and they weren’t even twins. The long awaited documentary And Two If By Sea is finally ready for post-production and all those stories are going to come out. Interestingly enough it’s the first time in the twins 30-ish years on this earth that they are separated and doing their own things. Think about that!
Director and childhood friend Justin Purser talked to Surfline alongside Ceej and Damo:
How have you chosen to explore the twin phenomenon?
Justin Purser: I mean, even though I grew up with these guys, some of the stories they were telling me I’d never heard before, absolutely jaw-dropping stuff: Identity issues, sibling rivalry at the highest level, and we really dive into the psychology of twins to show how interesting a dynamic it is, especially with twins that go into the same sport. We even interviewed renowned and published twin psychologist Nancy Segal, who will be in the film shedding some light on the contentious relationship that CJ and Damien have had and explaining some of the unique mirroring of identical twins. The scope of this story can reach a very broad audience.
Seems timely, too, now that CJ and Damien are leading separate lives… for the first time in their lives.
Damien: Yes, and I think we touch on that a little bit in the movie. This is the first time in our lives where we’re not surfing together, not doing the Tour together. We’ve actually gone our separate ways. CJ’s doing Salty Crew and repping while I’m still trying to do some things in surfing that I’ve always wanted to do. It felt a little strange at first, that distance, but change is good.
CJ: I’m really living through my brother now because I don’t get to experience those things anymore. The closest thing I have to the experience now is when I’m reading a story about him, whether he’s doing the big-wave thing or scoring somewhere. On the other hand, all these things that I’ve learned on the business and industry side, maybe Damien’s learning through me, things he wouldn’t otherwise learn because he’s still surfing.
“CJ & Damien Hobgood’s inspiring story of sibling rivalry can inspire millions to succeed. Coming from nothing, their brotherly antagonism was used to push the other to becoming two of the most iconic professional surfers in the world. It is a cinematic tale of fate, destiny, and family.”
