Steve Berra Confesses: Reasons Why He Built ‘Fake’ Street Spots For 2005 “Skate More” Part
Just a month after Steve Berra’s Instagram meltdown in which he allegedly boasted (according to SLAP, and you can watch it below if you desire) that, “Nobody is core, except me.“ amongst other outrageous things (bitching about DC not having money, then said they paid HUGE sums of money to sponsor “the Dime contest, in, ummmm, Canada”) Berra himself gave us, little ol’ Board Rap, the exclusive story on why he built those ‘fake spots’ in the 2005 DVS movie Skate More. It was like Christmas morning! He even called us, ‘Pal.’ We’ll pretend it was said in a complimentary way because after paying a quarter or so of a million dollars to ‘go clear’ in Scientology surely you’d be in a Zen state around the clock.
It’s fascinating that someone who has had such a large impact on skateboarding, like Berra and for surfing Kelly Slater, spend so much time interacting with trolls on social media. What could make them care what some random Internet hero thinks when they’ve done so much in their careers? He built the biggest, most popular, most money making ‘action sports’ of all time in The Berrics. It doesn’t matter what Johnny Kickflip thinks, they’re only trolling because they know they’ll get a reaction. Maybe because it’s easier beefing with the legendary Dylan Rieder/A.V.E/Jason Dill trio?
Anyway, here is our “exclusive” exchange on Instagram where Steve opened up as to why he built those street spots back in 2005…
It started with us so innocently poking the “Berr-a”, viewable in the Look Back Library Insta post above…
Then Berra fired back about his street spot-building antics. Giving us his top 3/4 reasons why he built ‘fake spots.’
So, broken down, here are Steve Berra’s reasons for building ‘fake spots’:
“Yeah, LOL, every video you see nowadays can’t find less than a dozen built spots. Or maybe:
- I had a totally reconstructed ankle,
- had 6-months to film for a part and…
- a single dad with a 9-year old daughter and couldn’t go to China and Barcelona and all your other spots you love to see in a million other videos and did the best I could to make the deadline.
Always two sides to a story pal!”
Ok, ok. Sure people building spots to get footy happens. Are there a dozen built spots disguised to look like real street spots in every skaters video part? Couldn’t answer that, but I’m sure others could. And then his reasons are his reasons. Fair enough. It can be tough out there.
But does someone like Steve Berra need to give excuses? Or point a finger and say others are doing it to? Or would it be more attractive if he just owned it?
The fascination with this topic actually has nothing to do with Berra building spots – couldn’t really care – but more so the fact that 12-years later he is still so fired up about the skate industry’s non-acceptance of him doing it that he is still getting involved with it on social media. Would anyone still care if Berra didn’t?
There’s still a couple hot maneuvers in this one. Can you spot the ‘fakes’? Do you care?
