Surfing is innately a selfish pursuit. Jon Rose managed to find a way to help others while traveling the world and getting barreled. Well actually he barely barrels the last 10-years since he started the world bettering Waves For Water non-profit, but for others that want to help out that could be in the cards. This profile is a great one on how being in the wrong place at the right time started a worldwide movement.

“That trip altered my life,” said Rose of the experience that led to him creating Waves for Water, an organization dedicated to providing people with access to clean water worldwide. “I learned a lot about myself in a really short period of time. I realized I had skillsets I didn’t know I had, because in those situations you’re tested in ways you’ve never been tested before. I’m somehow well suited for that type of work. The crazier things got, the calmer and more organized I became. I felt like I was flexing this muscle I never knew I had.”

Repost from our founder, @jon_rose: For me, one of the best things about #wavesforwater is my ability to play favorites. I know that sounds weird, but what I mean is there are places around the world that I have been going to for decades that, because of W4W, I now have the ability to help. Places that have given me so much over the yrs, that I am finally able to return the favor for. It’s an incredible feeling. I’m also aware that there are thousands of communities that need the help just as bad, but hey, we gotta start somewhere, and there’s no better place to start than with the people and places we’re intimately connected to. On that note, we we just finished an awesome project, with old friends, south of the border. It was as grass roots as it gets… got to do it with some of my oldest pals @bennyboosh and @gilcafesurf… and @surfer_magazine came down to join us too! Now, 200+ families have access to clean water! Oh, and we accidentally got A+ surf the last couple days, too…🤷🏻‍♂️😎 #karmachips😜 | #WavesForWater #Mexico #CleanWater
