Skateboard videos are perhaps he best for showcasing creative gimmicks. Spirit Quest is a perfect example. It blew the doors off low-budget creativity this year. This On/Off rendition from filmmaker Youri Fernandez is no exception.

He turned his lens on the art of skateboarding from four skateboarders (including Youri himself plus Adrian Chicouard, Yann Saubadine, and Paul Labat) in this monochromatic dark/light portrait. Making Berlin their own personal playground and musically tracked by a metronomic composition like a scene out of a Christopher Nolan movie.

“The film is part of the HOW MANY BPM? project, a performance and installation series in which skateboarders become human metronomes as they ride back and forth on a ramp. The project was founded in 2014 at the Parisian gallery l’Hermitage by both Fernandez—co-founder of Berlin-based skateboard brand and art collective FLVR—and visual artist Iouri Camicas, who invite various musicians to create a sound universe to accompany each of the performances.”

Yeah it’s a gimmick. A pretty damn cool one. Nice tribute to the all white / all black wearing antics of legends like Dylan Rieder, Heath Kirchart, and others.
