How To Keep a Surf Spot Secret | Tips for dummies
You’d think if you scored good waves in a secret or loc’d out location you’d keep it a secret. But there are a bunch of dummies out there and the rise of social media has made it even worse. Even surf magazines are hiring Interns who are geotagging waves on Instagram. Insane!
So for the true newbies or just plain stupid people there are a few rules to follow regarding not blowing out spots. Seeing as how it’s getting harder and harder for locals to punch others in the face these rules must be known. Now no one likes being on the receiving end of a ‘smoke bomb’ from another crew, but sometimes it’s a necessity.
While this link out is a little lame (no Mavs will never be as crowded as Malibu) there are certain truths that must be retold.
- Never geotag.
- Don’t make calls or post pics before even paddling out. That used to catch you a slap back in the day. Go for your surf and then call after to say, “Shit many missed it.”
- If you’re posting a photo keep all background out of frame.
- Don’t post real time
There’s many more, but you get the point.
Also is anyone else still shocked that Jeff Clark surfed Mavericks alone for 15-years before boards and wetsuits were even at a high level? That just seems shocking that anyone would even want a piece of that wave all alone. So cool!
