As the world turns to the far arctic in search of the next uncrowded perfect wave it seems we’ve forgotten that there are some that are still board short-able. Or perhaps were. With all that’s happening in Yemen these days it doesn’t seem likely that many will taste it’s fine barrels again any time soon. And according to – perhaps – Yemen’s greatest ever surf explorer Chas Smith, that is a damn shame. He spent much time searching for perfect waves from one end to the other on multiple occasions post 9/11, meeting its people, eating its food, and feeling its passion.

Now he is writing a non-hyperironic piece about the beauty of Yemen the country. Read the prologue quick so you can start on Chapter 1 below.

Not believing there are perfect waves in Yemen? Pretty sure somewhere on the web is Dave Wassel getting an epic triple barrel on the first wave he ever caught out there. We may be making this up and didn’t bother to look, but it just may be out there!
