I’ve always been of the mindset that if there’s somewhere you want to go it’s best to just book the ticket solo and if a friend or two jumps on board all the better. But if you wait around for a surf posse you spend too much time sitting at home dreaming about all the places you want to go. On top of this solo surf traveling is the best way to meet people and get in touch with yourself. Legendary solo surf traveller Kepa Acero must have this similar mindset.

Kepa sat down with STAB and gifted us his rules for going on solo surf trips. Here’s a sample:

“Mr Acero, as much as he enjoys company while travelling to surf, prefers to go it alone. The man once told us a story about nearly drowning in quicksand, while roaming remote Alaska for nearly a month, with a board bag, a GoPro and utmost solitude. “I’ve been travelling alone for seven years now,” he says. “After 15 years of travelling for myself and on the QS, always with a crew I had never done it solo. So I went to Africa, Indo and Australia alone and found out it was a really special human experience. I’ve been stuck to it ever since.” “

Kepa does this about 6-months a year and the GoPro changed his damn life so you know he knows the tricks. A few of them are:

  1. If not rolling solo bring one or max two friends. No more.
  2. Travel alone to find new people, not to be alone.
  3. Struggle is good. It makes the right feel that much better.
  4. Pack light so you can hitchhike or hop a train.
  5. Bring lots of music and books.
